Earlier on Wednesday, Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports reported that the San Diego Padres are one of four known teams involved in the hunt for catcher David Ross. The others are the Cubs, Braves, and Red Sox.
Ross has spent the last two seasons with the Boston Red Sox. In 2013 he served as the backup catcher for Jarrod Saltalamacchia. However, whenever Ross played (36 games) he made it incredibly hard for opposing teams to steal bases. He threw out runners at a clip of 41% while the league average was 26% which helped the Red Sox during their championship run.
He began the 2014 season backing up AJ Pierzynski, who struggled mightily before being released by Boston on July 16th. Ross split time with youngster Christian Vazquez for the remainder of the season.
Though he is not much of a threat at the plate as he hit only .216 in 2013 and .184 in 2014, but he could be a solid defensive presence as a back-up. Also, the Padres have a young pitching staff and Ross could be a solid mentor and guide for their staff.
Will Ross fit in San Diego? We’ll see.
