Padres Rumors: Catchers In Play For A Trade?

We all know the Padres are looking to upgrade their offense. We know about their top three starters being in play for trades to help said offense, but according to CBS Sports Jon Heyman, the Padres catchers are available.

The Padres have Yasmani Grandal, Rene Rivera and top prospect Austin Hedges, who I have already advocated trading for in this space.

Grandal in 128 games hit .215 with 15 homers and 49 RBI in 2014. Grandal just turned 26, and when finally healthy in September, put up a .296 average with four of his homers.

The 31 year old Rivera came out of nowhere to have pretty productive season for the Padres. Rivera hit .252/.319/.432 with 11 homers and 44 RBI. I think teams realize that Rivera is a backup, and a depth piece, but maybe someone has an extra infielder or outfielder to trade.

The interesting piece would be Hedges. If a team in need of a catcher and maybe has an extra outfielder to trade it could be an interesting prospect for prospect swap. It would also tell you that the new regime believes in Grandal moving forward as the guy behind the plate.

Whatever the Padres do, they need to improve the offense. Look for the Padres to make a move to do so and hopefully soon.
