The Padres finally got a game back last in their 4-1 victory over the Dodgers in Los Angeles last night.

This big story was Cameron Maybin returning to the roster after serving a 25-game suspension for his usage of banned substances. Maybin didn’t start in his return, so once again, it was San Diego’s young guys putting on a show.

Right Fielder, Rymer Liriano had an excellent night at the plate going 2-for-3 with a double and a walk while scoring twice. Liriano had a bit of trouble in the eighth when he was controversially called out trying to take third base on a pitch in the dirt. The call was confirmed upon review.

Jake Goebbert also had a nice night at the plate. Goebbert went 1-for-3 with a walk and a run scored.

It would be interesting to see if Bud Black opts to move Liriano and Goebbert up into the top half of the lineup. The two have a combined .428 On Base Percentage since joining the team in August. The only player with a higher OBP in August is Seth Smith, who sits at .429.

The youth movement is working and if Bud Black wants an extension, he needs to take notice.

Triple A: El Paso Chihuahuas (63-69)

The Chihuahuas came from behind to win a close one at Oklahoma City last night when they beat the Redhawks 2-1.

Matt Wisler proved why he’s the number one pitching prospect in the Padres organization by throwing seven strong innings of one run baseball. Wisler allowed just five hits and two walks while striking out seven. The lone run came in the bottom of the fourth inning off of a double, a single, and a sacrifice fly. The outing was one of Wisler’s best outings of the year and proved to be enough to earn him the win.

The Chihuahuas tied things up in the fifth off of a Brian Bixler ground out which scored Taylor Lindsey.

The game remained tied through seven.

In the top of the eighth, Rico Noel scored on a grounder by Jeff Francouer. Francouer reached on a force attempt that ended in a fielding error. The Chihuahuas struggled to anything else going and the score held up through the end of the game.

It should be noted that Taylor Lindsey’s bat is starting to come around. Although he struggled early, the young second baseman now has five hits and a walk in the last four games.

Double A: San Antonio Missions (63-65)

The Missions played as a complete team in their 5-0 road victory Wednesday night over the RoughRiders.

Leonel Campos, who has struggled this year, tossed a gem. Campos was on the hill for six innings and only allowed two hits and one walk on eight strikeouts. Campos had allowed 27 runs in his previous 27.2 innings before coming into last night’s ball game. Hopefully this start will instill some confidence in the starter and help him end the season on a positive note. Campos’ eight strikeouts and six innings were season highs.

What’s not to like about Cory Spangenberg?

EVERYTHING if you happen to be facing him.

Spangenberg continued his torrid pace through Double A going 2-for-4 with two doubles, two runs scored, an RBI, a walk, and a strikeout. The 23 year old is now hitting at a .335 clip with a .374 On Base Percentage. Spangenberg only has two home runs on the year, but power isn’t his game. You know what is? Consistency. Spangenberg is a career .296 hitter in his four years in the minors and could find himself leap frogging Taylor Lindsey next year if Lindsey continues to struggle.

Austin Hedges and Hunter Renfroe had a rough nights at the plate going 0-for-8 with a walk and four strikeouts.

The Missions scored in the first, second, fifth, and sixth innings, including a solo shot from Cody Overbeck in the top of the fifth.

Leonel Campos: 6 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 ER, BB, 8 K

Cory Spangenberg: 2-for-4, 2 2B, R, RBI, 1 BB, 1 K

Cody Overbeck: 2-for-4, R, RBI, HR

Future Friar of the Game

Austin Hedges: 0-for-4, BB, 3 K

Hunter Renfroe: 0-for-4, RBI, K

Single A: Lake Elsinore Storm (70-59)

When it rains, it pours for the Lake Elsinore Storm.

The tarp covered the field until just before the game with both teams forgoing batting practice due to weather. Unfortunately, it looked like Storm may have needed it last night in their 4-0 loss at home.

The Storm combined for only four hits and two walks at home last night.

Once again, Mallex Smith stole the show, belting a triple to right field. Smith could have turned it into an inside the park home run with his speed but was given the sign to hold up at third and followed orders. The relay was short and off target which would have allowed smith to score easily.

A Storm victory would have secured their sole position of  first place. The Inland Empire 66ers were rained out and Lancaster won to move even with Lake Elsinore

The Storm only have ten more games at home this year, so head up to Lake Elsinore and support them during their playoff run while you still can. Some of these players will be called up to Double A San Antonio next year and this could be your last chance!
