The Padres finally got a game back last in their 4-1 victory over the Dodgers in Los Angeles last night.
This big story was Cameron Maybin returning to the roster after serving a 25-game suspension for his usage of banned substances. Maybin didn’t start in his return, so once again, it was San Diego’s young guys putting on a show.
Right Fielder, Rymer Liriano had an excellent night at the plate going 2-for-3 with a double and a walk while scoring twice. Liriano had a bit of trouble in the eighth when he was controversially called out trying to take third base on a pitch in the dirt. The call was confirmed upon review.
Jake Goebbert also had a nice night at the plate. Goebbert went 1-for-3 with a walk and a run scored.
It would be interesting to see if Bud Black opts to move Liriano and Goebbert up into the top half of the lineup. The two have a combined .428 On Base Percentage since joining the team in August. The only player with a higher OBP in August is Seth Smith, who sits at .429.
The youth movement is working and if Bud Black wants an extension, he needs to take notice.
