Padres Minor League Roundup For August 11th

The big news from last night didn’t come from the prospects on the farm, but rather the highly anticipated arrival of the Padres #6 overall prospect, Rymer Liriano. Liriano looked great on the field and appeared to fit well with the team. Although he was unable to connect for his first hit, Liriano showed hustle in the outfield and patience at the plate. He did manage to get on base when he was hit by a pitch in the fourth inning and drove in his first Major League RBI when he was robbed of a hit on a bases loaded “sacrifice fly” to the center fielder on a sliding catch. The Padres looked like a better team with Liriano in the lineup and went on to win 4-3.

As for the farm, it was a rather quiet night. The San Antonio Missions, Lake Elsinore Storm, and Fort Wayne Tincaps all had the night off while El Paso and Eugene both played games on the road. With Rymer Liriano getting called up, a hole has opened up in Triple A for someone to emerge as the next top hitting prospect. And believe me, there’s no shortage of talent. There is still plenty to get excited about in El Paso, and there are a few guys who might get the next call up.

With both other Single A affiliates having the night off, the Eugene Emeralds were finally given a night of their own to shine. The minor league season is winding down, and the Padres front office will be assessing the team for standouts to move up to the next level in 2015. Unfortunately for the Ems, no one was able to create separation from the pack last night.

Triple A: El Paso Chihuahuas (59-64)

The El Paso Chihuahuas played the final game of a five-game road series against the Salt Lake Bees on Monday night. El Paso won the first three games of the series in convincing fashion before dropping a narrow one on Sunday. Last night the Chihuahuas showed a lot of heart and rallied late, but ultimately lost this nail-biter 7-8. The clubhouse was searching for answers to replace the newly called up Rymer Liriano, and some players stepped up in a big way. Others, are looking for consistency, while others still have yet to make an impact. Cody Decker had an 0-for-4 kind of night and Taylor Lindsey has been streaky since his acquisition going hitless in his last four games.

The Chihuahuas were roughed up early. It was a horrendous outing for Donn Roach. Roach would only last three innings, surrendering seven runs (six earned) on seven hits and five walks. El Paso didn’t panic, instead they calmly and cooly started chipping away at the lead. First, with a two-out two run home run by Jake Goebbert in the third inning, followed by a Goebbert RBI single in the fifth. The Chihuahuas’ bullpen gave up a run in the sixth inning to make it a 3-8 ball game. El Paso would gain some ground in the seventh on an RBI double from Jason Lane and an RBI single from Tyler Greene making it a 5-8 ball game. Desperate for runs, the Chihuahuas led off the top of the ninth with a Rico Noel double to left and followed it up with an RBI triple from Alex Castellanos. With one away, Tyler Green would reach base on a fielding error and Castellanos would score. Goebbert would ground into a force out and Cody Decker would strike out swinging to end the rally and the game.

Double A: San Antonio Missions (59-61)

The San Antonio Missions did not have a game last night. Tonight they take on the Arkansas Travelers at home. Robbie Erlin is expected to take the mound for the Missions as he continues his rehab assignment in Double A.

Single A: Lake Elsinore Storm (66-54)

The Lake Elsinore Storm did not have a game last night. Tonight they travel to San Bernardino to take on the Inland Empire 66ers. Lake Elsinore heads into tonight just one game out of first place in the California League South division.

Single A: Fort Wayne Tincaps (52-66)

The Fort Wayne Tincaps did have a game last night. Tonight they travel to Lansing, Michigan to take on the Lansing Lugnuts. Fort Wayne won their last series against the Lugnuts, two games to one.

Single A: Eugene Emeralds (24-32)

The Eugene Emeralds lost a 6-11 on the road to the Boise Hawks, in what could have been an even bigger blowout. The Ems pitching staff gave this one away, allowing fifteen hits, six walks, and eleven earned runs. The Hawks’ offensive onslaught lasted four innings, scoring all eleven runs between the third and the sixth. The surprising fact is that only two of these hits were for extra bases: a home run in the third and a double to lead off the fourth. The key to victory for Boise was moving the runners over. Five of the nine starters for the Hawks had multi hit games, a feat that none of the Emeralds were able to pull off. Franchy Cordero had a rough night, going 0-for-4 with a strikeout and an error. Eugene put their best efforts on the table in the top of the eighth inning, when they were down 3-11 and put together a nice little rally. The rally came in the form of a lead off double, a walk, and back-to-back doubles. A sac fly would bring us to the final score of 6-11 before the rally fizzled out. It was good to see that the Ems were able to put together some offense after being down by so much.
