The Padres’ record got back on track with a much needed win Saturday over the Pirates, but their offense is still undeniably bad. With only four hits, the Padres will undoubtedly be looking to shake things up soon. The Padres’ outfield hit a combined 1-for-10 and continues to be a weak spot in their lineup.

Speaking of weak spots, Jedd Gyorko went 1-for-4, and is just 3-for-21 in his last 6 games.

Triple-A El Paso might have an answer for all four struggling positions. There are answers to the problems that face the San Diego Padres, and those answers are just a phone call and a four hour flight away.

The boys in Double-A San Antonio are making some noise as well, hoping they might have a shot at some big league openings and could get a look or two if given the chance.

The Single-A clubs are getting rowdy with their bats, but they are still a few years off from getting looked at seriously at the Major League level.

The problem isn’t that the Padres don’t have options. The Padres have plenty of options. The real problem is which options to call up and which players to – option – back down. Perhaps today’s Minor League Roundup will offer some clarity.

Triple A: El Paso Chihuahuas (58-62)

The El Paso Chihuahuas had an incredible offensive outburst from all of their stars in last night’s 11-7 win over the Salt Lake Bees.

This is good news for new Padres General Manager, A.J. Preller, who will surely be looking to try out some of his newly acquired toys at Petco Park before the season’s end. Everyone in the lineup got on base at least once. Those who couldn’t get a hit, showed patience at the plate and managed to get on base via free pass. The Chihuahuas managed to score in five different innings, proving that their hot night at the plate was no fluke.

Cody Decker hit his first (spoiler alert) of two lead-off home runs in the top of the second inning. His second came in the fourth, his twentieth of the season. Rymer Liriano continued to pressure the front office into giving him a look in the big leagues this fall, by having yet another multi-hit game. Liriano went 2-for-5 with a double.

New 2014 addition, Jake Goebbert made a mockery of the Angels’ MiLB affiliate by going 3-for-5 with a three run home run. Goebbert now has fourteen hits in the past ten games and is throwing his name in the hat to get called up. Rico Noel also had himself a fine night going 2-for-3, with two doubles, scored two runs, had an RBI, walked, and stole a base. Enough good things can’t be said about the kind of games these players had.

Double A: San Antonio Missions (59-60)

The San Antonio Missions dropped a tough one on the road Saturday night, 3-4 to the Northwest Arkansas Naturals.

Missing from the lineup was the San Diego Padres future backstop, Austin Hedges. Hedges was coming off of a good showing Friday night, but odds are that the skipper wanted to give him the night off after fourteen innings in the crouch.

Joe Wieland was fantastic on the hill for the Missions, going five innings, allowing just four hits and one earned run, while striking out four. He looked every bit the #18 overall prospect in the Padres organization that he’s advertised as.

The game was scoreless heading into the top of the fourth inning, until Hunter Renfroe hit a sacrifice fly to center field to score Travis Jankowski from third base. The next batter, Robert Kral, would fly out to left field to end the inning, stranding Yeison Asencio on third. Acensio had reached earlier in the inning on a one-out double. Wieland gave up a home two-run homer in the bottom of the fifth, but only one of those runs was earned due to the baserunner getting on base due to a fielding error by Diego Goris. Weiland would escape getting tagged with the Loss after Asencio belted a two run shot in the top of the 6th. The bullpen would go on to give up the tying run in the 8th, and a bases loaded walk-off single in the 9th.

Single A: Lake Elsinore Storm (64-54)

They say hitting is contagious. So whatever the Chihuahuas had, must have blown West to Lake Elsinore. The Storm stomped the High Desert Mavericks 7-2 at home on Saturday night. It was a good night offensively for most of the team.

The Storm got on the board early. In the bottom of the first, Alberth Martinez scored on a Benji Gonzalez ground out to the second baseman. Dane Phillips walked. The next man to the plate was Padres #20 overall prospect, Gabriel Quintana, who homered to left which put Lake Elsinore up 3-0.

The Mavericks put up two of their own in the top of the second off of Padres #5 pitching prospect, Zach Eflin. Those would be the only runs of the night that Zach Eflin would allow. Not to be outdone, the Storm also put up two runs in the bottom half of the second on a Mallex Smith single which scored Jeremy Baltz, and a wild pitch which scored Jose Rondon.

However, it is pretty exciting to see the kinds of things that Trea Turner and Jake Bauers continue to do in Fort Wayne. Turner had a mixed game, going 1-for-3 with a run, a stolen base. Normally, that might not sound too bad for a leadoff hitter. It might sound a bit worse if turner were to have been picked off at second base and thrown out at third, both of which happened Saturday night. Turner is showing raw talent and speed, but he will have to learn to to pick his moments to help benefit the team. It’s unlikely that not stealing third in either event would have prevented him from scoring on a single.

Neither team scored until the bottom of the 6th inning when the Turner scored on a Franmil Reyes single to center. Reyes would score two batters later on a John Nester single. That was it for the club offensively on the night. Lake County would go on to win after scoring two in the seventh, one in the eight, and two more nails in the coffin in the ninth.

Single A: Eugene Emeralds (24-30)

Eugene got caught the hitting bug as well, putting together 13 hits in a 7-6 victory over the Hillsboro Hops. The Emeralds did all of their damage in the first and second innings.

The Ems started the night out hot, with back-to-back doubles, and back-to-back singles. Auston Bousfield scored on the River Stevens double. River Stevens scored on the Franchy Cordero single. And Michael Miller scored on a Yale Rosen single. Trae Santos hit a fly ball to right to end the inning. Zechariah Lemond gave up a homer in the bottom half of the first which cut the lead to 3-1.

In the second Miguel Del Castillo doubled, Bousfield walked, and Stevens doubled in both men. Miller doubled Stevens to third,a and Cordero singled in both men. The rally fizzled to a close over the next few batters.

Hillsboro put up three in the third off of Lemond, who would pitch through the fourth before being pulled. The Hops would score two more runs in the sixth inning off of Eugene reliever, Wilson Santos, before eventually running out of steam. Tomorrow, the boys in green head to Boise for a three game series against the Hawks.
