Padres’ Minor League Round Up For July 31

The Major League trade deadline came and went and the only last minute deal the Padres made was trading Chris Denorfia to the Seattle Mariners. While I understand the reason for trading the soon to be free agent outfielder, I am still sad to see him leave. He is one of those rare players that always gives 110% and truly fit the mantra of being a “gamer.” The last Padre that I think fit this category was David Eckstein. Denorfia or “Dino” will be missed, but I wish him the best of luck throughout the rest of his career. Now let’s take a look down on the farm to see how the future Padres are doing.

Triple-A

Box Score

The El Paso Chihuahuas lost to the Las Vegas 51s 2-0.

The Chihuahuas offense forgot to show up as they were held to 6 hits. Jake Goebbert, although hitless, reached base the most with 2 walks. Goebbert is currently in a slump; in his last 4 games he has gone 2-for-15.

Tonight Chihuahuas’ Matt Wisler (6-4, .62 ERA) will face the 51s and top prospect Noah Syndergaard (8-5, 5.16 ERA). First pitch is at 10:05 pm ET.

Double-A

Box Score

The San Antonio Missions defeated the Frisco RoughRiders 6-3.

Joe Ross won his second game in three starts since being promoted from Single-A Lake Elsinore. Ross pitched 6 strong innings allowing 1 run on 6 hits while striking out 5. In 19 innings at the Double-A level, Ross has struck out 18 while only walking 1. That is great command that even recent Hall of Famer Greg Maddux would be envious of.

Tonight the Missions send Bryce Morrow (3-3, 2.50 ERA) to the mound to face Jerad Eickhoff (3-3, 2.50 ERA). First pitch is at 8:05 pm ET.

Single-A Advanced

The TinCaps lost a nail biter that lasted 13 innings. Fort Wayne lost on a walk-off wild pitch by Jason Jester. TinCap SS Trea Turner 3-for-6 led the offensive charge for the TinCaps. Turner has absolutely killed it since being promoted to Fort Wayne. At this level, Turner owns a triple slash line of .476/.544/.652 with home run and 8 stolen bases. Turner has so far lived up to the billing of being the Padres 2014 first round pick.
