It is being reported today that the Padres have placed first baseman Yonder Alonso on the 15-day DL with tendinitis in his wrist. To take his place on the roster, the team has called up outfielder Jake Goebbert from Triple-A El Paso.

In 69 games this season, Alonso’s struggled, batting .210 with five home runs and 22 RBI, but he has seen his average slightly improve over his last 10 games.  He  has been sidelined since June 17 after experiencing discomfort in his right wrist.

Over the course of his career, Alonso’s had a history of injuries. In 2013, he missed most of the season with a fractured hand. The Padres are expected to use utility man Tommy Medica at first base along with catcher Yasmani Grandal while Alonso is sidelined for the next couple of weeks.

Goebbert, who will be making his first trip to the majors, was part of the trade that sent Kyle Blanks to the Oakland A’s earlier this year. He is currently batting .270 with five homers and 18 RBI at El Paso. With the depth in the outfield, Goebbert will more than likely make a spot start or pinch-hit in late games situations, but it does gives fans a glimpse into his possible call up in September.
