Padres’ Minor League Roundup For June 8th-Decker Goes Yard

The Padres’ minor league teams had a night of mixed results. After a long weekend dominated by the MLB First Year Player Draft, the Padres looked to improve their farm depth with position players due to their immense depth of quality pitching. Lets take a look down on the farm.

Triple-A

The El Paso Chihuahuas (31-33) defeated the Reno Aces (37-26) 10-7. The Chihuahuas are 7-3 in their last ten games, bringing them on two games below .500 on the season, which is good enough for second place in their division.

Chihuahuas’ relief pitcher Dennis O’Grady (2-0, 3.24 ERA) earned his second win of the season. Blaine Boyer pitched a perfect ninth inning for his seventh save of the season. Chihuahuas’ 2B Brooks Conrad (12) and 1B Cody Decker (5) both belted two-run home runs.

Tonight the Chihuahuas return to El Paso against the New Orleans Zephyrs (33-30) to open an 8-game homestand. The Zephyrs send Alex Sanabiad (2-1, 3.48 ERA) to the mound against the Pups, who as of the publishing of this article, have yet to name their starter. First pitch is at 6:35 pm CT.

The San Antonio Missions (31-31) defeated the Corpus Christi Hooks (31-31) 6-5.

The Missions’ offensive success was spread throughout the lineup with all 5 RBI coming from 5 different players.  Missions’ right fielder Yeison Asencio went 3-for-4, with an RBI, to lead the team in hits and raise his average to .286 on the season.

Missions’ right-hander John Hussey (2-3, 4.50 ERA) inherited a runner with 2 outs in the fifth to earn his second win on the season. Johnny Barbato pitched two innings to earning his 16th save on the season.

Tonight the Corpus Christi Hooks send Brady Rodgers (1-7, 4.20 ERA) out against the Missions, who as of the publishing of this article, have yet to name their starter. First pitch is at 8:10 pm CT.

The Lake Elsinore Storm (38-27) lost to the Inland Empire 66ers (22-43) 3-1.

The Storm had 7 hits during their loss yesterday. Hunter Renfroe and Diego Goris lead the team both going 2-for-4. Renfroe is 7-for-17 during his hot streak, with a slash line of .411/.475/.487 during that stretch.

Tonight, the Storm return to the diamond looking to win the 4-game series against the 66ers. The Storm will send starter Bryce Morrow (1-0, 4.15 ERA) against the 66ers’ starter Mark Sappington (0-3, 8.79 ERA). First pitch is at 6:05 pm PDT.

The Fort Wayne TinCaps (28-34) lost to the Bowling Green Hot Rods (29-33) 7-1.

Hot Rod starter Ryne Stanek (3-2, 2.16 ERA) held the Storm’s bat quiet last night. Storm 1B Jake Bauers had the lone RBI, going 2-for-4 on the night raising his average to .373. Bauers has had a very good season with a slash line of .373/.452/.567 in his first full professional season.

Tonight is the rubber match of the series. Lake Elsinore Storm will send Walker Weickel (1-6, 6.26 ERA) against Hot Rod starter Jamie Schultz (1-0, 1.06 ERA). First pitch is at 8:05 pm ET.

Dominican Summer League

After a day off the DSL Padres (2-5) return to the diamond against the DSL Twins (3-4).  As of the publishing of this article neither squads have named their starter. First pitch is at 7:30 am PDT, yes, that’s 7:30 a.m. on the west coast!
