Outfielder Nick Torres was selected in the 4th round and 117th overall by the Padres Friday. The 6’1″ 220 pound Torres was First-Team All-Big West as a sophomore and this year he hit .322 with 6 HRs, 52 RBI and a .483 slugging percentage. Cal Poly-San Luis Obispo finished 42-17 this year, much of that due to Torres. He led the conference in RBI and was third in home runs.
Torres has a solid bat, with serviceable skills in the outfield. He once had an 18-game hitting streak. He was listed as #79 on Baseball America’s Top College Prospects list. He homered off of Pepperdine in the regional final recently and also drove in 3 runs in that game. He has been clutch for the Mustangs all year. Torres was the second outfielder taken by San Diego. Gainesville High’s Michael Gettys was selected in the second round.
