The Padres’ minor league affiliates ended the weekend strong combing for a 3-1 record. Here is the minor roundup for May 18.
Triple-A
The El Paso Chihuahuas defeated the Las Vegas 51s 10-9.
This game was full of offense from both teams. The Chihuahuas down 7-1 in the bottom of the sixth broke out for 6 runs. The Chihuahuas had four doubles in the innings. Jace Peterson, Jake Goebbert, and Tyler Greene added homeruns to the help the Chihuahuas prevent from a four-game sweep. Keyvius Sampson had a rough outing lasting 4 2/3rd innings allowing 6 runs on eight hits and 2 walks while striking out 4. After allowing a leadoff double, Hector Ambriz retired the next three batters for his first save on the season.
The Chihuahuas begin their next series against the Sacramento River Cats, which at the publishing of this article neither team has announced a starter. First pitch is 10:05 pm ET.
Double-A
The San Antonio Mission defeated the Frisco Rough Riders 9-5.
After allowing 4 unearned runs in the first inning Missions starter John Hussey settled down allowing a total of 5 runs (1 earned) in 4 1/3rd innings on 9 hits, 1 walk with no strikeouts. Padres’ top-ranked prospect Austin Hedges went 1-for-3 with 1 run and 1 RBI while striking out twice. Hedges is still looking to improve offensively before being called up to the Big Show. Hedges currently owns a OPS of .781.
San Antonio will complete their four-game series with Frisco tonight. The Missions send Casey Kelly (0-0, 1.50 ERA) against the Rough Riders’ starter Alec Asher (3-3, 4.24 ERA). First pitch is at 12:05 pm ET.
Single-A Advanced
The Lake Elsinore Storm defeated the Modesto Nuts 4-2.
Lake Elsinore’s Zach Eflin pitched another solid performance allowing 2 runs on 7 hits and 1 walk while striking out 7. Eflin didn’t factor in the decision as he left the game with a 2-2 tie. The Storm scored 2 runs in the bottom of the sixth off RBIs from Jeremy Rodriguez and Alberth Martinez.
The Storm send Colin Rea (4-1, 3.79 ERA) to the mound against Modesto’s Matt Flenor (3-4, 5.88 ERA). First pitch is at 9:05 pm ET.
Single-A Low
The Fort Wayne TinCaps lost to the South Bend Silver Hawks 11-10.
The scoring went back and forth all night with 5 lead changes, which three game in the game’s last 3 half innings. The Silver Hawks won on a walk-off single from Daniel Palka off of Nick Mutz who had his third blown save of the season. Mallex Smith lead the offensive charge for the TinCaps with 3 hits raising his average to .294 on the season. Dustin Peterson, Dane Phillips, and Ryan Miller each had 2 RBIs on the night for Fort Wayne.
Fort Wayne sends Kyle Lloyd (1-1, 1.74 ERA) to the mound to begin their next series against Adam Plutko (2-1, 4.58 ERA) and the Lake County Captains. First pitch is at 6:30 pm ET.
