According to a report that surfaced by Jeff Sanders of the San Diego Union Tribune, the San Diego Padres and GM Josh Byrnes has obtained minor league second baseman/shortstop Benji Gonzalez from the Pittsburgh Pirates for cash or a player-to-be named later.

The 24 year old Gonzalez was a seventh round pick by the Pirates in 2008 and is a utlityman player that can play short, second, and third. He is being sent to Single-A Lake Elsinore Storm, but while in the Florida State League, he was .232 hitter with a homerun and 25 RBI in a little over 442 plate appearances.
