Dennis Lin of the UT-San Diego reported via Twitter that the San Diego Padres have released minor league reliever Tony Sipp, who immediately signed a major league contract with the Houston Astros. Sipp had been pitching in Triple-A for the El Paso Chihuahuas in 2014.
Sipp had come to San Diego by way of signing a free-agent contract with the team during spring training. The lefty had tossed 15 innings with an ERA of 4.30. Sipp has almost 260 innings of big league experience as middle-reliever, and remains valuable because of his ability to lock down both right-handed and left-handed hitters. He spent last season splitting time between the Cleveland Indians and division-rival Arizona Diamondbacks.
