Preview: Padres Open Four Game Series With Rockies

Following their first series win against the Detroit Tigers, the Padres try to make it two in a row as they host National League West rival Colorado Rockies tonight at Petco Park. The Padres come into this four game series on a high note after taking care of last year’s Cy Young Award winner Max Scherzer and holding the reigning American League MVP Miguel Cabrera to one hit.

Left-hander Eric Stults, (0-2, 5.59 ERA) takes the mound against Rockies right-hander Jordan Lyles (2-0, 3.86 ERA). In his last three starts against the Rockies, Stults has posted a 3-0 record with a 3.05 ERA. He is looking to get back on track after two shaky outings against the Miami Marlins and Cleveland Indians. A return to Petco Park might be what Stults needs since his ERA is a run and half lower at home then on the road at 3.06.

It has also been announced today by the Padres that second baseman Jedd Gyorko signed a $35 million extension with the club that will keep him in San Diego until 2020. Gyorko comes off an impressive series against the Tigers providing key offensive support. His signing marks the continuing shift from the previous ownership to develop and sign their prospects to long-term deals. Are the Padres finally borrowing a page from the Tampa Bay Rays?
