Alberth Martinez probably should have been a lot higher in our rankings. I consider him a sleeper prospect with big time potential. That being said, why would I rank him higher if he is a sleeper? That would kind of defeat the purpose. If he goes to the California League and rakes, he won’t be sleeping for very long.

Martinez can play all three outfield positions which is a very good thing. It enables whatever team he plays for to keep his bat in the lineup. After a down year in 2012, Martinez was back with a vengeance this past season. He improved his numbers drastically in every area. Martinez missed most of July but was able to still post career numbers. With Fort Wayne, he was one of the older players on the team and a lot of the younger players turned to him for mentorship. It appears that having guys looking up to you can make you work even harder. His .340 batting average with runners in scoring position demonstrates how strong his will was to not let the younger guys down.

Martinez will most likely start the year off with the Lake Elsinore Storm. A strong showing there, combined with his age, could get him to San Antonio by years end. It could also remove the “sleeper” title and catapult him to the top of the prospect listing.
