Here is the “Daily Roundup,” Friars fans:
- Jamal Collier of Padres.com mentioned how well Will Venable has hit lately. Since July 14, the outfielder has hit .375 over his last 15 games. While it’s not particularly impressive, Venable has raised his overall batting average to .245 thanks to his hot streak as well.
- Austin Laymance of MLB.com provided a preview of tonight’s game between the Padres and the Orioles. Edinson Volquez will take on Bud Norris tonight at 7:10 PDT. The Padres have won their last four series, so they will need to sweep Baltimore in this two-game set to keep their current streak alive.
- Hunter Renfroe, the Padres’ 1st round pick in the 2013 Draft, has made quite the splash since he joined San Diego’s Single-A affiliate in Eugene, OR in July. According an article on MILB.com by Josh Jackson, Renfroe just enjoyed a three-hit game and had a home run taken away due to a fluky situation on the base-paths. Erased home run aside, Renfroe was just named to the Northwest League’s All-Star team for his efforts over the last month. Overall, Renfroe has hit .302 (29 for 102), smacked nine doubles and four home runs, recorded 16 runs batted in, and slugged .521.
- It finally happened, Friars fans. San Diego’s lone 2013 All-Star, Everth Cabrera, has been suspended for 50 games by Major League Baseball according to Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports. This is no shock, especially since his name was linked to the “Biogenesis Scandal” from what seemed like the outset. Now that “Cabby” is sidelined for the rest of the regular season though, the task will fall to Logan Forsythe and Alexi Amarista to fill in until the 2013 campaign is finished.
