Here is the “Daily Roundup,” Friars fans:
- As most of witnessed on Saturday afternoon, Yasmani Grandal sustained a terrible knee injury during San Diego’s 5-4 loss to Washington. Chris Jenkins of the San Diego Union-Tribune reported in his most recent Padres-themed article that Grandal will be heading to the 60-day disabled list. In addition to his thoughts on Grandal, Jenkins highlights Jesus Guzman’s penchant for hitting go-ahead home runs.’
- With Grandal headed to the disabled list for such an extended period, the Friars needed to fill the void at the catcher position. Due to their need for a backup behind Nick Hundley, the Friars’ brass called up veteran catcher Rene Rivera from Triple-A Tucson. Corey Brock & Andrew Simon of MLB.com wrote a terrific piece on Rivera and his journeyman-like career through professional baseball.
- In a bit of good news, Brock tweeted that Yonder Alonso is set to work out with the Padres’ Single-A affiliate in Lake Elsinore, CA. San Diego’s beat writer mentioned that it is a precursor to a rehab stint for the Padres’ first baseman who went down with a hand injury back in June.
- Joey Nowak of MLB.com shared his thoughts on the upcoming series between the Padres and the Rockies. Edinson Volquez will take the mound tonight against Tyler Chatwood as San Diego’s starter will try to stop his team’s losing streak at nine.
