The Royals signed former Padre Miguel Tejada to a minor league deal today. The weirdest part of the deal is that Tejada will be added the 40-man roster, as soon as the Royals have an open spot, according to ESPN Deportes reporter Enrique Rojas(link is in spanish).

Tejada did not play in the majors last year, but has played winter ball this offseason to get into game shape. He last appeared in the big leagues with the Giants in 2011.

Tejada played a decent shortstop for the Padres in 2010, when he was acquired near the trade deadline. He played in 59 games for the Padres, where he posted a triple-slash line of .268/.317/.413, with 8 homers and 32 RBI’s. The Padres elected not to resign him after the season.
