The Padres made a roster move prior to Tuesday’s game, as reliever Alex Hinshaw was designated for assignment. The Padres purchased the contract of reliever Tom Layne from AA San Antonio.

Hinshaw saw quite a bit of action for the Padres in 2012. Hinshaw posted a 4.50 ERA in 32 games for the Padres. He showed flashes of brilliance, striking out nearly 12 batters per nine innings pitched. Hinshaw also walked 20 batters in his 28 innings of work. His last appearance came Sunday for the Padres, as he pitched a scoreless inning in a loss to Pittsburgh.

Layne, who is 27, was acquired in a trade with the Diamondbacks on May 3, for cash considerations. He started five games for AAA Tucson, posting a 7.77 ERA. He was demoted to AA San Antonio, and was used exclusively out of the bullpen for the Missions. In 32 games for San Antonio, Layne posted an 0-5 record, with a 3.33 ERA. He did average a strikeout per inning in AA.

Layne made his ML debut Tuesday night, and pitched a scoreless inning in the loss to Atlanta.
