Joe Wieland Joins the Disabled List Club

It’s like a disease for the Padres pitching staff right now.  Some viral outbreak has spread through the starter, made its way across the vast Petco Park outfield and found refuge in the bullpen, only to then turn back and hit the starters again.  Joe Wielandhas elbow tightness and will be placed on the 15-day disabled list.

“I haven’t had any actual pain, just discomfort,” Wieland said.

While that’s good news, we heard similar positive outlooks when Cory Luebke first experienced tightness and soreness.  He is now on his way to being shut down for the season.

The Padres have now had six pitchers hit the disabled list.  Of those six, four are starters.  Injuries are unavoidable, but to have as many injuries as the Padres have had to both pitchers and position players, the team is simply unlucky this year.

Tim Stauffer will likely take Wieland’s spot in the rotation rather than someone else from the ranks of the minor leagues.  Stauffer was scheduled to come back during the Phillies series anyway.
