Huston Street Officially Hits the DL, Trade Value May Be Affected
Yesterday, we talked about the injuries to Cory Luebke and Huston Street. By the time the post was published
yesterday, Luebke was already on the DL and talks were heating up about whether or not he would have to undergo Tommy John surgery. As for Huston Street, he was being scheduled for an MRI. The results of the MRI came back, and Street is now also on the disabled list.
Street has been placed on the 15-day DL with a strained right lat. Mile Mikolas has been selected from Triple-A Tucson to fill Street’s roster spot.
The injury, while not severe, could affect Streeet’s trade value. As I recently discussed, the Padres misfortunes this year would likely lead the team to be sellers come July. Street, with the extensive amount of injuries and implosions by closer across the league, would be very attractive to numerous teams with his sub-1.00 ERA. However, the injury could give teams across the league pause.
A team looking for a boost in the bullpen to make a play-off run will be looking for a durable player, someone who can carry them through the rest of the season. Unfair or not, the shoulder injury makes Street damaged goods this season. There will always be a little extra thought given to making a trade for a half a year for a player who has already been on the DL with a strained shoulder.
The Padres, who did not figure to extend Street’s contract at the end of the season, will look to move Street by the July 31st non-waiver trade deadline. At least, that’s the direction the club seems inclined to take. They do not figure tone competitive this year, and if presented with the opportunity to load up on more young talent, they will need to do so.
While the injury may cause teams to second guess a move, there should still be no shortage of interest in Street. With the expanded play-offs this year, more teams will be in the hunt. Thus, there should be more trade deadline interest than normal.
