Padres vs Phillies: San Diego Wins Two in a Row

facebooktwitterreddit

For the first time this season, the San Diego Padres have won two straight games.  It did not start out pretty though.  The Padres committed three errors in the game, but they were aided by two errors by the Phillies.  Anthony Bass pitched six strong innings and allowed just one unearned run.

Nick Hundley was 2 for 4 with a triple, a home run, and four RBI.  Chase Headley was 1 for 2 with an RBI.  And the Padres managed six runs in the game to help back young Anthony Bass.

Bass was wild early in the game, but managed to get out of multiple james.  He walked five in the game but settled down and ended up with seven strikeouts.  He allowed just three hits and lowered his ERA to 2.33.

Orlando Hudson, fresh off rumors that he would be cut soon, had another hot day – his second straight.  Hudson went 2 for 3 with a triple.  The Padres trail just the Rockies in triples this season.  They have six and Colorado has seven.

Despite having lost every series they’ve played coming into this one against the Phillies, and despite dropping the first two of the four-game set, San Diego managed a split, and for the first time this year has a two-game winning streak.

The lone Phillies run scored when Will Venable botched a ball in right field.  On a single to right, Carlos Ruiz went to third and was held up, but Venable, who was charging the ball hard expecting a play at the plate, inked the ball with his glove and missed it.  The error allowed Ruiz to jog home.  Earlier in the game, Yonder Alonso mis-played a ground ball to first.  Then in his haste to recover, tried a circus-style flip to Anthony Bass that allowed the runners to advance.  Two errors on one play.

San Diego has a much needed day off tomorrow.  They will then host the Nations for three games at Petco.  Clayton Richard will take on new-National Gio Gonalez at 7:05 PT.
