Padres at Cubs Game Recap 3/24/12

The split squad game against the Cubs allowed the Padres to at least split the day. While half the team was losing to the Reds in Peoria, this half was able to take the Cubs 5-1.
Anthony Bass got the start for the Friars and went four innings. He gave up one hit, one run, and struck out one. He was solid. Micah Owings then came on and pitched three shutout innings.
The game was tied in the fourth inning when Will Venable smacked a two-run double to break the game open. The Padres scored three in the inning and never looked back. Venable was 1 for 2 in the game, and his spring BA sits at .359. Yonder Alonso continued his hot-hitting ways as well. He went 2 for 3 and has raised his average to .283.
With the other half of the team’s performance in Peoria, it was nice to offset it with a road win against the Cubs. The win gave the Padres 14 overall for the spring. Only the Tigers have more (18) in all of baseball. The Padres are tied for the Cactus League lead in wins with Oakland.
The Padres will host the Diamondbacks today in Peoria at 1:05 PT. Dustin Moseley will get the start.
