Padres Ink Dominican OF Franmil Reyes

On Tuesday the San Diego Padres signed 16-year old Dominican OF Franmil Reyes for $700,000. At 6’4″ 180-190 pounds Reyes is already well-built and possesses impressive raw power. He’s also a bit of a better known commodity than a lot of teenage international free agents that sign with major league teams.

Reyes was the named the MVP of the Dominican Prospect League (DPL) All-Star Game which took place back in January. He also showed well at this year’s Under-Armour All-America which took place at Wrigley Field in August.

While all are in agreement with regard to his power potential, there are differing opinions on some of his other skills. Baseball America assessed his arm as being below average and implies that he will be a bat only corner outfielder. By contrast, DPL scouting report states that he has above average arm strength and solid fielding ability.

Time will tell if he winds up being a one-tool player or something more, but the power potential and already well-built frame make this a shrewd signing from my standpoint.
