Padres Acquire Kyle Phillips From Blue Jays for PTNBL

The Padres have acquired 26-year-old Kyle Phillips from the Blue Jays for a player to be named later.

Phillips is a versatile player who has seen time at catcher, first base, and third base. He played in the majors for five games last season and will be assigned to Triple-A Portland.

A gap hitter with doubles pop, Phillips was hitting .265/.334/.383 in his eight-year minor league career entering 2010, and hit .258/.310/.333 for Triple-A Las Vegas this season. He went 3-for-5 with his first homer of the year in his first game with his new organization Saturday, playing first base.

Did the Padres win the trade? Depends on the PTNBL and if Phillips really can stick behind the plate. His bat isn’t good enough for either infield corner in the majors. He’s probably an upgrade on Craig Cooper though.
