Just one day after going 1-for-3 with a walk in the California/Carolina League All-Star Game, shortstop Drew Cumberland was hitting leadoff for the Padres’ Double-A San Antonio affiliate.
Cumberland leaves the California League with an impressive .365/.404/.542 line. He hit seven homers and stole 20 bases as well. Still 21, he’s younger than most Double-A players.
With Everth Cabrera taking a step back this year, it’s good that Cumberland has progressed to the point where he will enter 2011 with significant experience in the upper minors. If all goes well, he could be ready for the majors about a year from today.
To free a spot for Cumberland on the Missions’ roster, infielder Jesus Lopez was demoted to Lake Elsinore. Cumberland will team with Logan Forsythe and James Darnell to give the Missions a formidable infield.
