Padres Select HS RHP Michael Ellis With 35th Round Pick in 2010 MLB Draft

The Padres’ seemingly endless string of pitching picks in the 30s continued with Michael Ellis, a Canadian high school righthander.

Ellis is a 17-year-old from British Columbia with good projection in his frame. He’s an athletic 6’2″ 180.

Ellis’ athleticism allows him to repeat his delivery in spite of it being a bit of a herky-jerky motion. The motion adds deception to his pitches and makes them play up, and his mechanics are solid despite his unorthodox motion.

Ellis’ fastball is in the 86-89 mph range. His offspeed stuff is nascent, but he does have very good command for his age.

Ellis was on the Canadian National Team as well, so that’s gotta count for something, right?

Ellis’ polish and projectability make him an interesting late-round flyer.
