The Padres’ 19th round selection for the 2010 draft is junior college righty Tyler Norwood.
Norwood, 19, is a big righthander with a solid low-90’s heater and the makings of two good offspeed pitches in his slider and changeup.
He struck out over a batter per inning, but his command is something of an issue, and he posted a 5.45 ERA in 2010.
However, Norwood didn’t pitch much in high school, so it’s understandable that he’s a bit raw, and it’s nice that he already has three serviceable pitches and a durable frame.
This is certainly an upside-heavy pick after the relatively safe selections of Wes Cunningham and Dan Meeley in the previous two rounds.
