With catcher Yorvit Torrealba placed on the restricted list for personal reasons, the Padres have recalled catcher Dusty Ryan from Triple-A Portland.
I wouldn’t get too excited about Ryan, despite his career .257/.338/.386 MLB line; he’s batting just .118/.211/.227 in AAA with 46 strikeouts in 110 at-bats. Obviously, he’s not exactly tearing it up, and isn’t in top form.
Ryan is 25, so he’s young, and he’s put up some decent power numbers at times, which is nice for a catcher, so he remains an interesting guy long-term. Clearly, though, he’s not swinging the bat well at all this season, so he’s going to have to fix that up before I can consider him an MLB-caliber player.
Torrealba isn’t expected to be out that long, so I doubt Ryan will see much, if any, time.
