The San Diego Padres are amidst their worst skid of the 2025 season. Losers of five straight games entering May 22, the Friars have totaled three runs scored across this span, allowing 32 runs.

Now sitting at 27-20 in the NL West standings, they have dropped to third place behind the Dodgers and the Giants. It's at this point when the front office staff starts to think about what kind of moves are imperative of being made. With Oscar Gonzalez already being released this week, two other players could be in danger of losing their roster spot. Jason Heyward has been below average at the plate, and there may not be time for Sean Reynolds to figure it out in the bullpen.

Padres' Jason Heyward, Sean Reynolds could be on thin ice

The poor offense that San Diego has displayed over the last several games is alarming, which should have President of Baseball Operations A.J. Preller thinking about what bat he can add to the lineup. With Brandon Lockridge returned from injury, on top of Heyward's dwindling numbers on offense (41 OPS+), there is really no justified case to keep Heyward on the team moving forward.

Heyward's veteran leadership was enough to get the Padres off the ground to begin the season, but now, producing is much more important than a father-figure presence.

On the mound, the Padres are starting to see their bullpen dwindle. This does not bode well for Sean Reynolds, who was on the injured list with a foot injury. He is barely used as it is, and to his credit, he has been decent in his last two outings. However, his ability to give up the big inning can be used against him. The Padres might be interested in calling up a hard-throwing relief prospect, or trading for a reliable arm in place of Reynolds, who has allowed five runs in six innings this year.

It's not full panic mode just yet for the Padres, but this past week has been brutal. Some moves probably need to be made, which could force Heyward and Reynolds out of a roster spot with the Padres.
