The Padres have had a rollercoaster season. In 2025, they experienced a red-hot winning streak to kick off the campaign, and then completely cooled off following their dominant start.
Somewhere in the mix, Padres fans have forgotten about Xander Bogaerts, which makes sense. While Gavin Sheets' success has coveted the failures of other players, and Fernando Tatis Jr. playing like an MVP, Bogaerts' disappointing season has somehow blended towards the back of the fans' focus.
Unfortunately for Bogaerts, the focus is now on him. The 32-year-old shortstop is earning the highest payroll salary this season on the Padres, and he has not come anywhere close to living up to that contract. Through two-plus months of games, and a bad 2024 season in San Diego, the patience is running out on Xander Bogaerts.
He is signed through 2033, which is quite alarming after a forgettable 2024 season. His struggles have bled into 2025, and now, it just feels like a hopeless situation. In April and May this year, Bogaerts batted in the .230s each month. His 87 OPS+ is his worst mark since 2014 when was acclimating to the big leagues as a 21-year-old.
He's also striking out more often. For his career, Bogaerts has 1,739 hits and 1,217 strikeouts - a respectable ratio. This year, his 46 hits barely outpaces his 41 strikeouts, and has gone hitless in 25 of 56 contests. It's not the end of the road for Xander Bogaerts, but his decline at the plate - as both a contact and a power hitter - over the last one-and-a-half seasons is a major cause for concern.
If the Friars can find a jolt of success almost midway through 2025, it would likely come from Bogaerts. The rest of the offense is filing into their roles, and if they can get him back up to speed, the Padres could be in for an exciting postseason chase.
