Melvin Upton Jr. made his first rehab start for the San Diego Padres’ Triple-A affiliate, the El Paso Chihuahuas.

According to Jeff Sanders of the San Diego Union Tribune, it looks like he had a pretty good day:

Upton hit second in the lineup and went 2 for 5, with an RBI and a run scored; and two strike outs. He also stole second base twice, which is nice to see he’s getting his speed back.

Not too bad for his first taste of competitive baseball in awhile. Upton played Centerfield so when he’s ready to join the Padres major league clubhouse, my guess is it’ll be Abraham Almonte that will be demoted back to the minors.

We’ll keep you updated on Melvin’s minor league progress. To be honest, I’m not expecting too much from the other Upton, given his stats the last few season. However, part of me really hopes he finds his old self again, wouldn’t that be something? I don’t know if we’re that lucky though, this the Padres after all.
