Padres News: Brandon Morrow Placed on 15 Day DL

The San Diego Padres announced yesterday that they had placed Brandon Morrow on the 15 day disabled list with right shoulder inflammation. The move is retroactive to Sunday so he’ll be eligible to be activated on May 19th. Frank Garces has been called up from AAA El Paso and Odrisamer Despaigne will take his spot in the starting rotation.

While there was nothing to indicate that Morrow was injured, this hardly comes as a surprise. As Dennis Lin pointed out on twitter, Morrow is no stranger to the DL.

For the Padres, this a pretty significant loss. Morrow has arguably been their most consistent starter this season. He had gone at least six innings in all five of his starts and had the second lowest ERA on the pitching staff and the lowest walk rate. Thankfully Despaigne did an admirable job in his two starts filling in for Ian Kennedy.

Regardless losing a starter, especially the quality of Morrow, is not a good thing. Plus, Morrow’s injury history gives us a reason to be pretty scared. He hasn’t made 20 starts since 2012 when he made 21 starts.

Hopefully Morrow will be back once the 15 days is up and this injury will pass. Unfortunately, there’s little reason to believe that will happen.
