Last month, our Friars On Base staff released our predictions for the 2015 MLB season. Yesterday, Sports Illustrated also released their staff’s picks for the 2015 season as well.

The list of writers included: Tom Verducci, Albert Chen, Ben Reiter, Cliff Corcoran, Jay Jaffe, and Joe Sheeman.

All six of the Sports Illustrated writers predict that the hated Los Angeles Dodgers will win the NL West unfortunately; but still, that’s to be expected.

Most notably to us Friar Faithful, five of the six writers picked the San Diego Padres to win the second Wild Card spot.

The writers don’t go into detail on why they picked the Padres, but we can estimate that the Padres impressive pre-season make over has a lot to do with it. Prior to Preller’s moves, beginning in December, most of these writers probably would have picked the Padres to finish dead last in the entire National League. Now, with the Padres returning with their improved pitching staff (James Shields) and new offensive bats (Matt Kemp, Justin Upton, etc.), they’re looking like contenders, at least on paper.

You can read more on SI.com’s 2015 predictions here, which goes into their picks for Cy Young, MVP, and Rookie of the Year awards.

Check back in with Friars On Base this weekend for our own predictions for the San Diego Padres, as well as our staff’s picks for the 2015 World Series Champions.

See you all at FanFest tomorrow, Go Pads!
