The San Diego Padres announced more roster moves this morning, via their official blog, FRIARWIRE.

The new moves narrow their current Spring Training group down to 40 players.

The Padres as reassigned Jake Goebbert, Brett Wallace, and Cody Decker to their minor league camp.

We discussed a couple weeks ago, Goebbert was likely to be an odd man out this season with the starting and backup outfielders already pretty much set. In 16 games this spring, Goebbert was 4-17, slashing .235/.235/.412. Goebbert is still pretty young, so there is lots of time for improvement this season, most likely with our Triple-A affiliate.

Wallace signed with the Padres this offseason to a minor league deal, so this move was to be expected. Wallace put up some pretty good hitting numbers this spring, .391/.440/.565, so he’s a likely candidate to get an early call up if and when someone gets hurt.

Cody Decker might have actually had a shot at the final 25-man roster this season, had it not been for all the move AJ Preller made. Just like Goebbert, there just isn’t a place for him in the major league club. If you don’t follow Decker on Twitter already, I recommend it, great sense of humor and a Friars On Base favorite.

What do you guys think of these moves today? Any surprises or disappointments? Approvals?
