I’m Begging You Padres! Sign Yasmany Tomas!

Of all the teams pining for the services of Cuban refugee Yasmany Tomas, the Padres are the one team with the most need. Yes, I know there has been a lot written about San Diego and the slugging corner outfielder and I myself have found the need to describe the obvious fit in more detail than needed. But folks, the truth is that baseball fans will likely see the winter’s first snowfall before they see Tomas’s signature on a contract. It’s frustrating to say the least, as we saw this same situation last off-season first with Jose Abreu and then with Masahiro Tanaka. Negotiations are long, boring and upsetting, and the spiral of rumors is enough to drive even the most timid fan to total madness. But here’s the thing… Tomas wants to be a star and no team is in as much need for a star as the Padres. Tomas would be the center of attention in San Diego. My ultimate request for A.J. Preller and the rest of the boys in the Padres’ front office is to skip the song and dance and sign Yasmany Tomas!

More from Padres News

I know that I’ll be cold and miserable and deep into my school year when Tomas is added to a roster. At 23-years-old, Tomas still has a lot of time left in his prime years and he’s eager to make a name for himself like his countrymen Yoenis Cespedes, Yasiel Puig, Aroldis Chapman and Jose Abreu have already done. The Padres brass has already held two private workouts for the star and are one of the front runners to sign him. They’ll need to pony up a number around $100 million dollars, but I’d be surprised if there’s one soul who calls himself a Friars’ fan that wouldn’t spend that money on him. So here it goes fans. Here is my letter the Padres organization begging them to make this move.

Dear Padres,

I don’t know if you know this, but you haven’t exactly looked like a major league baseball team for a few years now. Your roster doesn’t exactly have superstars what with Cameron Maybin and Andrew Cashner constantly injured and Jedd Gyroko having trouble with consistency. You’re surrounded by competitive teams like the Angels, Dodgers, Giants and Athletics and you can easily be forgotten at times. But, in case you didn’t know, there’s a star coming to the Major Leagues and his name is Yasmany Tomas. He’s gone through Hell to be here and he’s eager to play ball.

Now I know that he’s basically the pretty girl without a date to the dance and you’re not exactly the most eligible bachelor like New York, Boston, St. Louis, Chicago or Los Angeles. No, you’re more like the quiet kid in the corner who nobody really knows a lot about. Well, every now and then the quiet kid in the corner gets the pretty girl and rides off into the sunset. Sure, it’ll cost you a lot of money, but it seems like a small price to pay to have a big star in his prime on your roster. San Diego… Please! I’m begging you! Sign this guy! You can do it! We believe! SIGN YASMANY TOMAS!

While it may be awhile before we find out where Tomas will land, his name is going to be buzzing around baseball circles until we know. It’s worth keeping an eye on as long as he is still a free agent. Play ball hopeful Friars fans!
