After a seesaw battle that witnessed the San Diego Padres blow a late-game lead–something this bullpen hasn’t grown accustomed to this season, they finally come up clutch against one of the best teams in baseball, and pull off a 12th inning win. The Padres continue to play extremely solid baseball during the second half of the season, and have proven it once again late Friday night, with a big win over the NL Western Division leaders.

Andrew Cashner in his second start since an extended period of absence due to a second trip to the disabled list with shoulder trouble, pitched an excellent game, tossing 6 innings, allowing only 1 earned run, striking out 8, and yielding only 6 hits on 89 pitches. Cashner was in line for the victory until Dale Thayer gave up a game-tying home run to Hanley Ramirez in the 8th inning, knotting the score at 2 apiece.

The Padres’ bullpen then returned to it’s normal status, and locked down the ballgame, going zero for zero with the Los Angeles bullpen for the next four innings, giving up only three hits over the final four frames, until Yasmani Grandal finally came through for the Friars in the bottom of the 12th inning, bringing home Yangervis Solarte–all while the bases were loaded, with the game-winner.

Only two Padres had multiple hits on the night, as Rene Rivera and Alexi Amarista had a pair of knocks each. Dan Haren for the Dodgers, pitched well enough to win too, going 6 innings and allowing 2 of the Padres’ 3 runs on the night. Ramirez led the Dodgers’ attack with 3 hits, along with the home run and a pair driven in.

The two teams return to action early tomorrow evening, with a 5:40 p.m. scheduled first pitch. The Padres are honoring former closer Trevor Hoffman, by inducting him into the team’s Hall of Fame prior to the game. In terms of game action, the Dodgers send Zack Greinke (13-8, 2.78 ERA) to the bump to take on Ian Kennedy (10-11, 3.75 ERA), as the Padres look for the series win Saturday night.

Keep the Faith.
