Padres Minor League Roundup for July 21st: Ross Makes AA Debut

facebooktwitterreddit

It was a solid night for the Padres affiliates, going 4-3 on the day. We also got to see Joe Ross make his Missions’ debut. Yonder Alonso and Everth Cabrera began their rehab and great performances from Cody Overbeck, River Stevens and Carlos Belen highlighted the evening’s action.

Triple- A

The El Paso Chihuahuas were defeated by the the Sacramento River Cats 6-1.

Box Score

The only positives to take out of last night’s defeat, was the progress of Yonder Alonso and Everth Cabrera. The duo had 2 of the team’s hits and drove in their only run for them.

Today, the Chihuahuas will send Matt Wisler (5-4, 6.16 ERA) to face the River Cats, who have not yet named a starter. First pitch is at 6:05 PDT.

Double-A

The San Antonio Missions topped the Corpus Christi Hooks 8-3.

Box Score

It was a solid night all around for the Missions. Jesse Hahn made his minor league return tossing 2 scoreless innings, while Joe Ross made his Double-A debut going 6 innings, allowing 3 runs. For Ross it was a decent debut. He started strong with 3 shutout innings, but he couldn’t keep it up in the second half of his outing. On offense there was a lot of praise to go around for their 10 hit attack, but the most deserving of the praise has to be Cody Overbeck who went 2 for 4 with a pair of RBI.

The Missions will send Bryce Morrow (2-2, 1.64 ERA) to the mound today to face Kyle Smith (4-2, 3.48 ERA) and the Hooks. First pitch is at 5:05 PDT.

Single-A Advanced

The Lake Elsinore Storm defeated the San Jose Giants 8-1.

Box Score

The Storm had a memorable offensive night last notching 8 runs on 9 hits. Dans Phillips, who is starting to heat up, had another great performance going 1 for 3 with 2 RBI. Elliot Morris turned in a dominant start allowing just the 1 run on 5 hits.

The Storm will  continue their series against the Giants today. The Giants will send out Pat Young (7-3, 5.70 ERA) while the Storm will start Bryan Rodriguez (5-5, 3.93 ERA) to oppose him. First pitch is at 12:35 PDT.

Single-A Low

The Fort Wayne TinCaps were defeated by the Cedar Rapids Kernels 8-1.

Box Score

The TinCaps struggled all around yesterday mustering only 3 hits while giving up 11 of them. When lacking hits in general you can imagine they’d lack the clutch hit as well, and they did going 0 for 8 with RISP. Their one and only run came off an error. On the mound top prospect, Max Fried, was making his second start with the TinCaps this year. He only went 2 innings, but that may have been by design with him still not fully recovered from a forearm injury that has kept him out for a majority of this year. He did allow 2 runs on 2 hits in his 2 innings, so while it wasn’t his best showing, it could have been worse.

Although we don’t usually highlight an opponents performance, I have to mention the Kernels’ catcher Mitch Garver who went deep 3 times against the TinCaps last night. When your team can only scratch across 3 hits, watching a guy hit 3 homers has to be that much more painful.

Today, the TinCaps will enjoy a much needed off day. They’ll be back in action on Wednesday to face the Beloit Snappers.

Single-A Short Season

The Eugene Emeralds beat the Hillsboro Hops 13-7.

Box Score

The Emeralds offense was firing on all cylinders last night. Franchy Cordero, Alex Dickerson, River Stevens and Nick Vilter all had 2 hit 2 RBI nights, but they weren’t the only producers as 7 of the 9 starters c all recorded hits. On the mound it was a different story for starter Michael Kelly. He would only survive 3 innings while giving up 7 runs on 9 hits. Thankfully the bullpen picked him up and tossed 6 scoreless innings.

Tonight the Emeralds will open up a series with the Tri City Dust Devils. The Dust Devils will send Logan Sawyer (0-1, 4.91 ERA). The Emeralds are yet to name a starter. First pitch is at 7:05 PDT.

Rookie: Dominican Summer League

The DSL Padres were defeated by the DSL D-backs 12-0.

Box Score

You know you have a problem when you have more errors than hits, and that was the case yesterday for the DSL Padres. Their 5 errors outweighed their 4 hits in what was an all around failure of a baseball game for the DSL Padres. The only 2 players who even warrant praise are Leury Molina, who was the only player to play the full 9 innings and not strikeout, and Rosmel Purroy, who has the only Padre pitcher who didn’t surrender a run out of the 6 pitchers.

Today they’ll get a chance for revenge against the DSL D-backs. No starters have named. First pitch is at 7:30 A.M. PDT.

Rookie: Arizona League

Box Score

The AZL Padres topped the AZL Brewers 10-3.

The Padres were dominant last night. 5 different guys had multi-hit nights while 7 guys drove in runs. The big night came from Carlos Belen who got the hard half of my cycle, a home run and a triple as well as a pair of RBI. Zach Risedorf also homered. Jamito LeBron also made a big impact, but his was from the mound. In his 4 inning start he surrendered just 2 hits leading to 1 run.

The Padres will get an another shot to face the AZL Brewers today. No starters have been named. First pitch is at 7:00 PDT.
