Report: Despaigne To Start For Padres On Monday

News broke Sunday night that Andrew Cashner would be scratched from his scheduled start on Monday night against the Giants. Cashner has been on the DL already this season so you have to wonder what’s going on. Is there a trade in the works? Is he hurt again? Whatever the reason, the Padres will have an interesting replacement starter.

Per Tim Dierks of MLB Trade Rumors, and confirmed by Jon Heyman of CBS Sports, Odrisamer Despaigne will have his contract purchased and will be starting the game on Monday night as Cashner’s replacement. The Padres have a full 40-man roster, so a move will be made between now and then to make that happen.

The 27-year-old only made two Double-A starts, and pitched to a 1.17 ERA. He was bumped up to Triple-A and is 1-3 with a 7.61 ERA for El Paso. He struck out 29 in 23.2 innings, but gave up 20 runs on 36 hits and walked 13.

A new regime means moves to be made. This may just be one in a series of them.
