Honestly, this feels like an exercise in futility. I like doing the live blog but, I might as well be an NL West reporter instead of a Padres reporter. Good night.

10 Dec 13 – 1435

The Rockies have traded Drew Pomeranz and a minor leaguer to the A’s for Brett Anderson. In limited action last year, Anderson had a 62.9% GB percentage (Good). He also had a 17.9% HR/FB ratio, though (Bad). I’m digging how Byrnes is just sitting back and watching all of this NL West action going on before he pulls the trigger on a blockbuster.

10 Dec 13 – 1300

The Trumbo trade happened. He is now a D-Back. Now there’s this:

Could Ackley be brought in as a utility guy? He plays 2B, 1B and OF? Is it possible this would be the move that triggers the trade of Headley so that Gyorko can shift to 3B? Will nothing at all happen? I’m gonna go with the third one.

10 Dec 13 – 1021

Usually where there’s smoke, there’s fire. Not always true at the Winter Meetings but, in this case I think it is. It appears that the D-Backs, Angels and White Sox have a three team trade in place sending Trumbo to AZ, Santiago and Skaggs to LA-Anaheim and Eaton to Chicago. It would be a pretty good deal for the Angels if it works out that way. Another NL West team adds a marquee name.

Day 1 Recap

There were no actual transactions yesterday by the Padres. There were a lot of rumors however and some statements by Josh Byrnes that give us some idea of which way the team is leaning. Today is very likely the day that a left handed reliever will sign with the Padres. The front office had several meetings lined up yesterday evening, presumably to woo Scott Downs, Eric O’Flaherty and others. Today’s biggest news is more likely to come from the camps of our NL West rivals the D-Backs or Dodgers. The D-Backs seem determined to leave the Winter Meetings with a new outfielder. It was reported that they lost out on the Carlos Beltran bidding and now have their sites set on Shin-Soo Choo. If this fails to materialize, expect a trade for Mark Trumbo that includes one of the D-Backs young pitchers, probably Skaggs. The Dodgers are still shopping all of their outfielders not named Puig.

Keep it locked in here for any Padres news or rumors as well as news and rumors from the other NL West clubs.
