Here is the “Daily Roundup,” Friars fans:
- Things only continue to get worse for the Padres’ make-shift starting rotation. According to Yahoo.com, veteran right-hander Jason Marquis could require Tommy John surgery to fix the ulnar collateral ligament damage he sustained in his right elbow.
- Jesus Guzman’s strong performance finally led to a win by the Friars on Monday evening. Bill Center of the San Diego Union-Tribune pointed out how Guzman has come through numerous times this season for San Diego, but his team has usually squandered ties and leads later in those games.
- With the trade deadline looming, many have jumped on the “Padres Are Selling” bandwagon. Mike Axisa of CBS Sports reflected that sentiment in his most recent article.
- In some positive prospect news, Keyvius Sampson was named the Texas League’s “Pitcher of the Week” for the month of June according to Corey Brock of Padres.com. Sampson, who pitches for Double-A San Antonio, has been on an absolute tear since May 16 of this year. The right-hander has posted a 7-1 record and a 2.27 ERA since mid-May, and he was even named the Padres’ “Minor League Pitcher of the month” for June.
