Here is the “Daily Roundup,” Friars fans:
- According to Corey Brock of Padres.com, San Diego’s recent two-week tanking has altered the franchise’s strategy with the trade deadline on the horizon. General manager Josh Byrnes is interested in acqurining players, just not “one-year rentals” in exchange for valuable prospects. I for one agree with Byrnes, and I hope that the team can restrain themselves in that respect.
- When the Padres shipped Ernesto Frieri to the Angles last May, they received Alexi Amarista and a minor league pitcher named Donn Roach. While Amarista has contributed at the big league level already, Roach could very well be the best player the Friars received in exchange for Frieri. Jonathan Raymond of MILB.com reported that the right-handed sinker-baller pitched six innings of one-hit ball last night as he helped the San Antonio Missions (San Diego’s Double-A affiliate) win a 1-0 game (via Padres.com).
- Jeff Sanders of the San Diego Union-Tribune wrote an article on the Padres’ recent struggles and their plunge into last place in the National League West.
