Here is the “Daily Roundup,” Friars fans:

  • Jon  Heyman of CBS Sports believes that Everth Cabrera deserves an All-Star nod for his efforts through the first three months of the season.  Despite his hamstring injury, Cabrera is on pace to set numerous career-highs and I believe that he deserves a spot as a reserve on the National League team.
  • With Cabrera now back in the lineup, the Padres needed to send someone down to the minor leagues.  According to the Friars’ team twitter page it was pitcher Burch Smith who was sent down to Triple-A Tucson.  The 23 year-old  right-hander has pitched 12.2 innings this year for San Diego and posted a 11.37 ERA.
  • Anthony Castrovince of MLB.com discussed a number of teams that are “straddling the fence” when it comes to “postseason contention.”  One such team is the Padres, and Castrovince discusses how San Diego’s brass will have some tough decisions to make with the trade deadline approaching at the end of the month.  I for one am definitely intrigued to see if the Friars emerge as “buyers” or “sellers” by the time that this month ends.
  • It is no secret that the Padres could stand to use some starting pitching depth.  With that particular need in mind, ESPN’s David Schoenfield makes a case for San Diego to pursue Cliff Lee via trade this month.
