Five Run Inning Gives Padres The Win

Oh, if only the season started in June. The Padres used a five-run fourth inning, and beat the St. Louis Cardinals 6-4 on Tuesday night. The win gives the Padres the series win, and San Diego has an opportunity for a sweep.

St. Louis jumped out to an early 2-0 lead against Padres starter Edinson Volquez. Volquez was his usual erratic self, as he walked six batters in his 5.1 innings of work. Despite the wild outing, Volquez allowed just two earned runs, in addition to winning his 10th game of the year.

The Padres took the lead in the fourth, with five runs in the fourth. Yonder Alonso drew a bases-loaded walk, and Logan Forsythe smacked a two-run double. Alexi Amarista followed with a two-run triple to put the Padres up 5-2.

The Cardinals chipped away, cutting the lead to 5-4, when former Padres prospect David Freese socked a homer to right. The homer traveled well over 400 feet to the deepest part of the ballpark.

The bullpen did the job, and Luke Gregerson stranded two runners on in the eighth inning. Gregerson also finished off the Cardinals in the ninth, picking up his sixth save of the year. Clayton Richard will make the start tomorrow, his first since becoming a father.
