Kip Wells, staff ace? Kip Wells pitched a gem against the Rockies — pitching seven shutout innings for the Friars, allowing just six hits. It was Wells’ first Major League win since 2009, when he pitched for the Cincinnati Reds.

The Padres got on the board in the third inning, when Chris Denorfia led the inning off with a single, and then stole second. Logan Forsythe stepped to the plate, and hit a pop-up that dropped in front of Rockies 3rd baseman Jordan Pacheco. Pacheco made an erratic throw, that allowed the Denorfia to score.

The Padres scored again in the seventh, on a 2-out RBI single that scored Alexi Amarista. Kip Wells allowed two hits in the bottom of the seventh, but got out of the jam unscathed.

Yasmani Grandal followed up his 2 HR game, going 0-4. Alexi Amarista had two more hits, to raise his average to .265.

Huston Street pitched a spotless 9th for his 12th save in as many attempts. Street was named to the All-Star team earlier in the day, and will represent the Padres in the Midsummer Classic.
