Alexi Amarista Helps Padres to Victory over the Los Angeles Angels

We’ve seen Everth Cabrera before.  He has never really overwhelmed us with his talent, and that’s why he hasn’t been able to stick around with the big league ball club.  However, with Cabrera at shortstop and recently-acquired Alexi Amarista at second base, watching Padres baseball has become bearable again.  The combination of Orlando Hudson and Jason Bartlett had frustrated fans since mid way through last season.  Now, with Hudson gone and Bartlett on the DL, we should get a much closer and a much extended look at both Cabrera and Amarista.  And Amarista is already delivering.

In just his third game with the Padres, Amarista helped the club to victory.  He went 2 for 2 with 2 runs and and RBI.  His RBI double in the seventh would be the game winner.  In nine plate appearances, Amarista is hitting .375, and he hasn’t struck out once.

The other new face for the Padres last night was Eric Stults.  Stults was claimed off waivers from the Chicago White Sox, and he had a solid Padres debut.  Stults went 6 2/3 inning, allowed just four hits, and gave up two runs.  He wasn’t able to earn the win, but he was impressive nonetheless.

Amarista and Stults have breathed life into a team with very little left to play for.  It’s early and neither has played enough with San Diego to draw conclusions, but the middle infield looks better, and Stults seems ready to provide solid starts in a filler role.

The Padres conclude their series with the Angels today at 1:05 PT.  Anthony Bass will take on Ervin Santana.
