Padres vs Rockies Game Recap: San Diego Dropped by a Rookie

Christian Friedrich last pitched for the Rockies’ Triple-A affiliate in Colorado Spring.  In five games for the SkySox, he was 2-1 with an even 3.00 ERA.  While his numbers weren’t bad, they didn’t indicate dominance by any means. But that’s exactly what he did to the Padres yesterday – dominate.

Friedrich tossed six innings, allowed five hits, gave up just two runs, and struck out seven Padres batters.  He was sparkling, while the San Diego bats were not.  In total, the Padres struck out 11 times in the game and collected just  two walks.

The Padres did take the early lead off Friedrich, but couldn’t maintain it.  They picked up two singles and a walk to push across their first run.  They wouldn’t score again until the third when Yonder Alonso continued his hot streak.  He doubled in Cameron Maybin.  Chase Headley tried to score as well, but he was gunned at the plate.

Anthony Bass started out strong.  He went the first five innings and allowed just one run.  Then the sixth happened.  After getting the first out quickly, Anthony Bass could only watch as what would have been out number two turned into an error by Andy Parrino.  Carlos Gonzalez then doubled.  With runners on second and third and just one out, Michael Cuddyer hit a sacrifice fly to score the Rockie second run of the game.  Bass intentionally walked Jason Giambi, a move that would back fire.  Willin Rosario was next and doubled in both runners for the Rockies (on a play that had to be reviewed).  Chris Nelson singled in another run before the Padres were able to escape the inning.

An error, an ill-advised intentional walk, a couple of big doubles, and the Padres were all but out of the game with their inept offense.  And as it turns out, they were in fact out of the game.  The Rockies pitching staff shut them out the rest of the way.

San Diego is off today, but they travel to Philadelphia for a three game series against the Phillies.  In game one tomorrow at 4:05 PT, Clayton Richard will take on Vance Worely.
