Throwdown Thursday – Week 2

Every Thursday, we at Chicken Friars will pick the two best Padres performers over the past week and analyze what they accomplished. Then we will leave it up to you, the fans, to decide who earned the week’s Throwdown Thursday’s honor.

First of all, I’d like to congratulate Clayton Richard for making history here on Chicken Friars. Richard became the first-ever Padres’ player to win the distinct honor of being crowned Throwdown Thursday champion by garnering 55  percent of the fans’ vote, edging out first-baseman Jesus Guzman with 45 percent.

Richard’s award-winning performance came against the Los Angeles Dodgers, where he pitched seven innings of two-hit ball while surrendering only two unearned runs. His performance followed by eight runs of support made him the first Padres starting pitcher to earn a win and be crowned Throwdown Thursday Champ!

This week’s Throwdown Thursday’s nominees feature two players who are swinging a very hot bat. One leads the Padres in almost every offensive category, and the other has made a heavy case to be penciled into the starting lineup on a daily basis:

Chase Headley vs. Chris Denorfia.

Chase Headley- After a slow start at the plate, Headley is finally becoming the hitter Padres fans are accustomed to seeing. Tied for the Major League lead in walks with 11, Headley boasts a .385 average and a .452 OBP with three home runs and 7 RBI in the past week.  In yesterday’s loss against theRockies, Headley homered twice.  Not only has he been getting it done with the bat, he has been keeping the Padres in close games with his stellar defense.

VS.

Chris Denorfia– Deno has been raising some eye brows with his play of late.  The outfielder has surprisingly been the most consistent hitter on the team. In Tuesday night’s game against theRockies, Denorfia went 4 for 4, boosting his week average to .467 with no home runs and 2 RBI. For the week, he  also posted a .529 OBP. Although his defense has been suspect at times, Denorfia’s bat certainly has deserved a spot in the Padres lineup.

Now Padres fans, vote in our poll for the Padres performer of the week.  Is it Headley or Denorfia ?
