Padres vs Diamondbacks Game Recap: Lack of Offense, Defense Stings Padres Again

San Diego jumped out to an early lead in the game.  It was just the second time this season they’d taken the first lead of the game.  However, it was not enough.  They scored the one run in the first but failed to score throughout the rest of the game, and the Diamondbacks won 3-1.

On the defensive side of things, the Padres fielders once again let the team down.  Anthony Bass was charged with one run, but it should have been unearned.  Jesus Guzman misplayed a ball in left and it nicked off his glove for a hit.  The official scorer called it a hit at least.  The Padres were charged with one error later in the game that eventually led to go-ahead run for the Dbacks.  So far this year, the Padres defense has been shaky at best.

Anthony Bass, on the other hand, was fantastic.  He was only allowed to go 4 1/3 innings, but struck out five, allowed just the one run, and gave up just three hits.  Ian Kennedy, though, was every bit as good.  Kennedy, who was in the running for the Cy Young last year, pitched six innings of five-hit ball.  He allowed just the first inning run and struck out nine.

The Padres got three straight hits off Kennedy in the first, including a Cameron Maybin triple, but were only able to score the one run.  In seven games this year, the Padres have scored a total of 21 runs.  While that’s not a terrible result, it is still in the lower third of the league for scoring.

Tonight, the Padres travel to Los Angeles to take on the Dodgers.  Clayton Richard, the openly Padre starter with a win, will take on Aaron Harang.  The game starts at 7:10 PT.
