Tim Stauffer Will Miss Opening Series Against Dodgers Due to Triceps Strain

In a move clearly designed to make my earlier piece on Edinson Volquez‘s Opening Day start obsolete, the Padres announced yesterday afternoon that Tim Stauffer will miss the opening series against the Dodgers with a strained triceps muscle.

"You never want to end Spring Training not feeling 100 percent, but I’ve got to deal with it and move on."

The team feels Stauffer’s arm experienced fatigue during the final two weeks of Cactus League play leading to the strain.  Stauffer finished the spring with a 6.75 ERA and has not looked like himself in recent outings.

Edinson Volquez will step into the Opening Day starter role, followed by Cory Luebke on Friday, and possibly Clayton Richard now on Saturday.
